So there's good news and bad news. Bad news first: there's no new episode of Grey's Anatomy this week. Good news next: last week's episode was full of provocative moments, none more so than the latest developments in the epically romantic relationship of Owen Hunt and Cristina Yang.
Season Six has been a struggle for our two badass doctors. The combination of the merger and the lack of a cardio-god had Cristina off-her-game and she and Owen spent the first third of the season just a little out-of-sync with each other. So Owen invited cardio-goddess (and Army pal) Dr. Teddy Altman to Seattle Grace as a mentor for his sweetie. There's just one problem. Teddy's carrying a blazing torch for Owen and the resulting dynamic has been, well, awkward. Despite this, Cristina's been digging Teddy as a teacher. So much so that when Dr. Yang thinks she has to choose between her love (Owen) and her art (surgery), she proclaims, "I choose my gift" and offers to let Teddy have Owen if she'll stay in Seattle. Here's where things start to get interesting.
Teddy, in a drunken rant, tells Owen all about Cristina's offer to "trade" him. Owen's reaction is gut-wrenching. In a matter of seconds his shock turns to stunned disbelief and then to resigned recognition of the truth. His pain is palpable. The conventional move would be for Owen to renounce Cristina and/or to fall into Teddy's all-too-willing arms. But what's fascinating is that he does neither of these things.
Instead, Owen goes directly to Cristina and fights for her and for their relationship. He starts with a passionate kiss, because sometimes for Owen "words fail". But when Cristina wants to know what's wrong, he manages to find just the right words.
"You make me sad. You think that surgery's gonna make you feel. You think that a successful career is going to make you happy. You think you know things. You know things and nothing else matters. No one else matters. People DO matter. I matter. We....we matter. You don't get to toss me aside. I won't let you."
This is why I love Owen Hunt. He doesn't run. He doesn't take the easy way out. He fights for the woman he loves with his whole heart. And Cristina? Almost frantic with worry when Owen arrives (she left him ten messages, which speaks volumes), she recognizes almost instantly that he knows the truth and steels herself for the rejection she thinks is coming. And then it happens. As Cristina realizes that Owen is not going to leave her, she simultaneously recognizes that she can not live without him. What was she thinking? She needs and loves them both: surgery and Owen. And she pulls him into a tearful, loving, passionate kiss of her own.
Like I said, it's epically romantic. And I can't wait to see what happens next.
